CHAPTER 9

The kids chatted happily about their Christmas plans as Maisie drove toward the Christmas tree farm in Deborah’s SUV.

“I hope Uncle Charlie can make it this year,” Zach said wistfully from the backseat. “Mom says he’s going to try.”

Charlie Jr., Maisie’s son and Deborah’s brother, was a sports therapist living on the other side of the country. “I don’t see why he wouldn’t be able to get away for a few days,” Maisie said.

“Dad’s going to miss Christmas, but he said he’d be here for New Year’s,” Haley said. “We’ll have everybody at least for a little while.”

“I love that we’re coming up to the lake for every Christmas now!” Zach announced. “Will we get more snow for Christmas, Grandma?”

“They’re certainly forecasting it,” Maisie told him. “In fact, perhaps while we’re out we’d better stop by the grocery store in Peppermill and pick up a few things in case we end up getting snowed in.”

She slowed for the turnoff to the Christmas tree farm. This hadn’t changed at all since last year. There was a large sign reading LILYPAD FARMS - Fresh Produce • Seasonal Gifts • Pet a Llama! Propped up against it, there was a portable sign on plywood reading CHRISTMAS TREES!!! with an arrow. It had been decorated with amateur but cheerful paintings of trees and ornaments.

The side road looked like it had been graded since the last time Maisie was here a year ago, or perhaps it was just that the SUV handled the ruts and potholes better than her old Buick. There were Burma Shave-style small signs along the road pointing the way to the tree farm. It looked like some new ones had been added.
